iPhone vs Android

I'm planing on buying a new fancy phone, an iPhone or an Android. I've still got the old crappy kind of phones without the flashy apps.

I'm personally not that fond of Apple's business model, and would need a damn good justification to buy an iPhone.

So, guys, what should I buy? I know nothing other than that they're shiny and will make my life better in some undefined fashion. I don't actually need a new phone, I just want to get on the bandwagon. I'm perhaps a corporate tool. I don't care. I want one anyway.

Please help the ignorant.

With the Iphone, you're stuck with only one design of the actual phone. With Android, you can get whatever kind you want. From any company to manufacture it, and pretty much any mobile carrier you want.

I'd highly suggest T-Mobile and their new Samsung Galaxy S phone. Sleek and slender like an Iphone, with a Super AMOLED screen ( Meaning very crisp and bright colors, plus a lot easier to see in direct sunlight than most phones. ), a huge and growing market of apps with many being free ad-supported (which is hardly a bother compared to the non-free, no-ad versions. ), 3.5mm audio jack ( something I had lacking on my G1.), it'll soon have the newest update to Android 2.2 which when used on a 1ghz phone like the Galaxy S is going to make an already blazing fast phone practically lightspeed. The browser for interweb fun is amazing, YOU GET TO USE FLASH ffs. Yeah yeah, some flash sites won't work, wah wah wah. Compared to Apple, in which NO flash sites work. Hmm. A bajillion other things I could go on about for just Android the system, and likely more I could go on depending on the style/maker of phone you get. A lot more 'options' when compared to Apple's Iphone.

I'm certain some Apple-heads will seduce you with their finer points as well. The Iphone is, for the most part, a rock solid phone. But even then, I'd still take nearly any Android-based phone over it.

Currently the Nexus One and Galaxy S are considered two of the most top-notch Android phones, and I only recommend the Galaxy S because the Nexus One is a bitch to get ahold of. ( I'm a T-Mobile customer, and they still force me into paying full-price for it if I wanted one. 500+ bucks. Fffffff that. )

As noted above in the main bulk of my post. Iphone = AT&T, period. Android = Whatever carrier you want. AT&T included. And you get to pick the style and maker of your phone.

This is a minor concern. In Stockholm (where I live) it doesn't really matter. iPhone is supported by Telia which is the old state monopoly company. So it's tainted and evil. But that doesn't mean I can't buy an iPhone anyway. I have no problems being evil. I'd just prefer not to be.

For an Android phone I can pick any company.

I got the G1 when it first came out and at that point settled with saying it was essentially the last phone I'd get. And for the most part, that's true. I will always get Android phones from now on, as the OS is just incredible to use, and I will strive rather hard to stick with phones I like. I would greatly prefer another HTC phone like the G1, but their selection is meh right now. I'd still vastly prefer a slider phone as well ( like the G1 ), but my brother-in-law has the Galaxy S and I got to use it.

In short, I don't need your semen. I got mine all over myself after using the newest Android.

I love my new android phone. Not just cause of the hardware, I love the OS.

And I give it a bit more time and its going to just dominate. Unlike apple's icrap which only apple is making and selling.... With android, there are like a million companies making phones and driving innovation ect.

I just upgraded from a regular Nokia cell phone with T-Mobile to the Samsung Intercept with Sprint. So far I dig the phone and I like all the dopey apps you can get with it. I don't spent a ton of time using the internet on my phone, but it's a nice option. From what I've seen of the IPhone's they work well but my understanding is that AT&T is limiting bandwidth now so that could make it less attractive if true.

some things to consider:

the iphone is very moderated environment (unless you jailbreak). if you dont plan on tweaking stuff endlessly, this shouldnt bother you.

the iphones moderated app-store environment may help prevent nefarious or unstable programs from fouling your experience.

the iphone requires itunes (for all intents and purposes i think). if you have a mac this isnt an issue. if you have a pc, you may not like having itunes on it (with android does it function as regular removable media?)

the android phones may have replacable batteries and expandable memory.

i dont know how the X, 2 , evo etc. measure up, but historically the iphone's screen has been much better and more accurate at tracking your finger.

i assume the andriod phones you're looking at are all gsm? in europe i'd be wary of cdma since i guess your cant get cheap local sims.

i have an iphone and like it. i think if i had an android phone, i'd like it too. they're both fun and useful.

does telia allow you to try one or the other out for 30 days with a minimal restocking fee?
