Earlier today Firefox updated itself automatically and mozilla stopped working entirely. I tried Internet Explorer and no dice there either. So both browsers were down. I checked my internet connection and it was fine. I was talking to people on AIM, looking at packets being sent and received so that wasn't the problem. Turned my firewall off, still no dice. Then I thought "a mozilla update seems to be what caused this so I'll uninstall it and see if that works". Swing and a miss. I borrowed my brother's laptop (it's what I'm using to post this right now) and googled the problem. Apparently it's common but none of the suggested solutions worked.

I took it to a friend of mine who has fixed computers of mine before and he couldn't figure it out. I don't know what the hell else to do. Vista came installed on the laptop. If it was up to me I'd be on XP.

I have had this happen to me I believe it is a java bug fucking up and killing the browsers i could not find my start up discs so i said fuck it and bought a new cpu.

Downloader.Swif.C is a Trojan horse that exploits the Adobe Flash Player Multimedia File Remote Buffer Overflow Vulnerability (BID 28695) in order to download more malware on to the compromised computer.

I had this happen to me like a month ago on my Gateway laptop. My laptop has some sort of rudimentary "go back" program that came installed on it. I never really use it, but I tried going back to the previous days settings and I think it fixed everything. The only thing I remember having to mess with was trying to find all my bookmarks. I don't remember exactly how I got those back, but I remember the solution to that problem was easy to find on the internet.

Long story short, see if your computer routinely saves your preferences and settings somehow, go back to a point in time before the problem occurs.

I've found the latest Firefox update to be quite unstable. I don't know if that's down to AdBlock etc but it seems to be crashing a lot.

Have you tried using an earlier version?

This same exact thing happend to a friend of mine and it turned out to be a virus. I think it turned out to be AntiVirus 2009 (could be wrong). I couldn't get any virus scanners to even run on their computer because of it, so I ended up formatting.

In the end their computer worked better anyway, but they lost a bunch of DRM'ed music.

this happened to a friend's computer recently. i don't know what the fuck it was, but it was definitely affecting both her IE and FF, but nothing else. i ran a few virus/malware/spyware scans and turned up nothing. back-up->format->re-install and problem solved.

like i said, i don't know what it was, but odds are 99.9% in favor of it not being a "fucking vista" problem, as most problems aren't... they are a result of faulty 3rd party drivers, 3rd party software, and/or good ol' user error. blaming vista is like running over a nail and then bitching about how much toyota sucks because you got a flat.

now that i think of it, i remember seeing an "AntiVirus 2009" in her start menu or program files that i tried to get rid of (and failed) prior to format/re-install.

The "Antivirus 2009" uninstall has a virus in it too, that reinstalls the program and the root virus... use Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Tool, and then run everything in safe mode. Takes a few passes, but normally it gets it.

My g/f's laptop came with Vista and at first I was like "What's all the bitching about" and then I got totally fedup up with all the niggling annoying bits eventually. When my system crashed and burned recently I was going to build a new rig from the ground up but I found a steal on TigerDirect and I could downgrade it to the latest version of XP Pro and still keep the Vista license if I ever want to switch back. That isn't going to fucking happen ever....I avoid using my g/f laptop unless for some reason I absolutely have to. Vista is dark pit of sorrow and is also where joy goes to die.

Sorry I can't help you though. If you can't go back to a restore point and get that to work, something is seriously wrong because of that update. I'd unistall it, clean the reg, nuke anything in that mozilla folder, find and old version and see if that would do it.

care to elaborate? i still don't understand the problems people have with vista. it seems to be a bandwagon kinda thing. people i've asked about why they hate vista come up with shitty answers. not knocking you for XP, its a great OS, just curious why the vista hate.
