My monitor is going tits up. It's my guesstimate it's not displaying about 15% from either end of the greyscale.

So, what's a poor motherfucker to do for a good monitor?

I've seen those $2000+ pro LCDs....way out of my budget.

Would it be possible to get a solid performer (good viewing angles, accurate color/black rendition) for ~$150?

After buying a Nikon D300s, I suddenly feel the urge to do it justice by getting a great lens for it. I'm looking for a replacement for my 18-200mm all-around lens. The Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED caught my eye, and seemed to be in a comfortable price range.

Any comments on that choice, or other recommodations is appretiated. Is for example the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G ED AF-S a much better choice?

I say spend the money on fixed lenses at 1.8.

The 18-200 *is* a great all arounder. Buy a piece of fixed glass that will serve you well in your primary shooting preference.

Edit: Still looking LCD advise peoples.

i would think the 17-55 would be similar to the 18-200 with the exception of more limited of a zoom.

my opinion is that you would have more of a kick out of a fixed lense like the guy above me said. my 50mm 1.4 is awesome

Two votes for fixed lenses, eh? I already have the 50mm 1,4, and it does rock my socks. (only fixed lens I have). Any recommodations? In summary, I'd like to shell out a few bucks if I can look at my photo afterwards and say "damn, I'm glad I used this lens in stead of my 18-200". A while back I looked at Sigma 30mm 1.4, is it worth a second look?

I think if you want a mid zoom, those two are the best available.
I'd take the 24-70, the 17-55 would be no good if you ever went full frame.
If I was happy with zooms, I'd take the 3 zoom kit, 14-200 full frame.

The 85 1.4 absolutely kills. I shoot 95% of my work with it. I had the 17-35 2.8, but love the results using the 85 and taking several steps back to get a similar FOV, and sold the 17-35 for a profit once I found this out. It's damn sharp, even at 1.4, and the colors are fantastic. Everyone who has this lens loves it. You should rent around to see what you like first -- what suits your style/subjects -- ziplens.com might be a good place to start.

The only lens I'm currently lusting after is the 70-200 2.8.
